A leading newspaper has highlighted two African locations in its new guide to the ‘top 20 cheapest places to retire’.  The Daily Telegraph has compiled a list of 20 unusual and cheap destinations for British pensioners to consider for their retirement and the list includes two African towns.

Increasing numbers of people looking to leave Britain

The newspaper reports that pensioners have been hit hard by the global financial crisis, saying: “Having banked on being able to live off a steady stream of interest from their savings, millions of people are discovering that the flow has turned into a muddy trickle.  Retirement plans are having to be revised, and more of us are investigating the possibility of selling up and moving somewhere cheaper overseas.”

A leading website found that 2.5 million overseas property searches were conducted on its site in August 2011 whilst the Daily Telegraph reports that ‘17 per cent of people with more than £250,000 worth of savings and investments are considering leaving Britain.’

If you’re looking for an African destination to retire to, the Telegraph highlights these two locations.

Marrakesh, Morocco

The newspaper reports that Marrakesh ‘can be very relaxing’ and recommends that you ‘sip mint tea on your roof terrace, then plunge into the bazaar and visit the city’s pulsing main square, the dramatic Jemaa el-Fnaa.’

A four bedroom, four bathroom property with plunge pool and large courtyard in the Old Quarter of Marrakesh would cost around £370,000, according to the newspaper.

Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt

The popular uprising in the country has not had a major impact on this Red Sea resort.  Retiring here guarantees you great weather all year round and the average sea temperature is 24C.  And, a litre of petrol costs you just 21p.

A one bedroom apartment in the resort with terrace, balcony and communal swimming pool can be snapped up for just £30-35,000.
