Overseas property investment is of interest to one in three future retirees in Britain, according to a new survey.

A study by Clerical Medical has found that of the people interested in moving abroad when they retire, 49 per cent would be interested in living somewhere within Europe.

English speaking regions were found to be of the most interest outside the continent, with Australia and the US the two most popular options for those who would consider buying overseas property when they retire.

Paul Shelley, spokesman for Clerical Medical, said: "Clearly the messages around the need to plan for a comfortable future are being heard by a lot of people. It's encouraging to see that future retirees have aspirational plans."

As well as an interest in actually moving abroad, the survey revealed that a large number of people in the UK are intending to travel more when they retire.

Some 77 per cent of people said they would like to head abroad to take their holidays, while 81 per cent plan to take more trips within the UK.
