March 31, Dubai, UAE - The Dubai World Cup horse race is set to take place here today at the Nad Al Sheba Racecourse. This is the world’s richest horse race with a purse of US$6 million. Not far behind that are the US$5 million Dubai Duty Free and the US$5 million Dubai Sheema Classic, the world’s richest two turf races. Three other races round out the day of racing, making it the most expensive day of racing ever.
Dubai has become a global cosmopolitan center in recent years and the Dubai World Cup is just one example of the Emirate’s expansion onto the world scene. Seeking to move beyond the oil and gas industry, Dubai, one of the United Arab Emirates, has sought to create a modern financial and business center. As part of this process, the government has sought to bring world class events including the Dubai World Cup, golf tournaments and auto racing here.
All around the city and Emirate massive cranes are building new and taller buildings, including one that is set to be the tallest in the world when complete.
