Sales of residential real estate in Finland peaked in mid 2008 and fell for several quarters, but have now started to pick up again. According to Statistics Finland, a government agency, prices for housing rose in the second quarter of 2009 by 2.3 percent in Helsinki and 5.8 percent overall from the first quarter of the year. That leaves current housing prices only 3.3 percent lower than they were at their peak.

The most recent data from Statistics Finland shows that the average price per square meter in Helsinki is 2,887 Euros, while the rest of the country has an average price of 1,500 Euros per square meter. Helsinki is the largest market in the country and also the most expensive. Apartments are common in the city, but there are many single-family homes on the outskirts of the city and suburbs.

Russians are popular international buyers in Finland and buy a lot of property and housing in the eastern part of the country. International property investors come from all over the world, but the majority of buyers are from Europe. Buyers do not typically have to pay fees in Finland except a transfer tax, making the process fairly easy.
