Cape Verde interest doubles

Cape Verde is becoming a destination of desire for Brits looking to buy property abroad, according to the latest research.

Currency specialist HiFX found that the number of Brits enquiring about property on the island more than doubled – and almost trebled – since March 2006.

While just five per cent of enquiries about buying property abroad were about Cape Verde in March, by July the number had reached 13 per cent.

"Cape Verde looks set to take over from the Canary Islands as many Britons' favourite island off the west coast of Africa," said Mark Bodega, marketing director for HiFX.

"Whilst buy-to-lets are popular, most people are buying a property as a holiday home because prices are so low."

The island, situated 300 miles off the coast of Africa, was touted by the Channel Four television show, A Place in the Sun as one of the top 20 destinations for overseas property last year.
