Just a ten minutes drive from the main tourist resort town in the north Corralejo,
is the small pretty village of Lajares. The town also boasts a 'lucha canaria' area which
is a form of wrestling that's very popular throughout the whole of Canary Islands.The main attraction for tourists has to be the local lace shop 'Artisania Lajares' where you can watch the local women actually making lace. Many coach trips use this as a stop off point for refreshments and the chance to buy some local canarian handicrafts In the southern part of the town are two windmills next to the church. Many years ago Lajares was a popular place and local people came from miles around on foot or with donkeys to grind their grain harvested from their land.The village has some great cafes , bars and bakery serving delicious cakes and pastries. Close by is the beautiful resort of El Cotillo. El Cotillo is a beautiful small village at the northern west of Fuerteventura, on the west. The village is set around the small pretty harbour that is mostly
used by local fishermen and local sailing enthusiast. This harbour is actually relatively new, the old harbour is only a short walk to the north over the headland that separates the two. There are several bars and restaurants close to the old harbour where you can relax and watch the astounding sunsets ,and the views from El Toston (the tower) are stunning. The Tolsten was built by the Spanish as a lookout point for spotting English pirates. Just a couple of miles
to the north of El Cotillo there is a lighthouse which is also a fishing
museum, a great destination for an afternoon stroll. There are miles of golden beaches here and even on a busy day they are too big to be overcrowded. To the north are the lagoon beaches of shallow clear water and white sand contrasting against the black volcanic rock. The biggest of the beaches, La Concha, has a large car park and a beach bar. It is very popular
with locals and tourists alike.The smaller lagoon beaches are favourite places
for naturists. There are even more beautiful beaches to the north of the
lighthouse.
