Important documents

 

You might want to bring all your important documents with you. Besides passport and visas, do not forget birth and marriage certificates, citizenship proofs, insurance policies, certificates, diplomas and university files, and other documents and contracts that are important to you. Find out if you need to have them translated, certified or legalized, so they can be also valid in a foreign country. To ensure that your mail is delivered to your new address, fill out the requisite forms at the post office. If they do not route it internationally, find a trusted friend or a family member who is willing to receive it on your behalf. Cancel all the fee-paying subscriptions and memberships in your country.

The old advice of bringing six months' worth of savings is a sound suggestion— and it should be a minimum.
