Prepping your house to show it to potential buyers is half the job in an effort to sell it fast and for the right price. This is after all what most sellers are after. But how much effort did you put into getting the home in top shape so no buyer will be able to resist it?

In most cases, even if your home was well-maintained throughout the years, there’s still some work left to be done to make the home more appealing to buyers. If you spruce up your home nicely, no figure will seem big enough. Here are some tips on prepping your home before you place the “For Sale” sign in your front yard or look for a reputable realtor.

Remove Any Personal Belongings
Selling your home can be emotionally hurtful, but if you really want to sell it you need to learn how to let go. Stop looking at your home as a personal belonging, but rather a product you’re selling. Think about how this change will help you transition into a different chapter of your life and how it will make another family happy. So say your goodbyes and get to work.

The first thing you should do is remove any personal belongings before you show your home to potential buyers. That includes all your family photos, vacation souvenirs, family heirlooms and other mementos. Basically, everything that you’ll be taking with you after selling your home.

The idea behind this is to give your buyers a clean slate, an empty wall where they can picture their own family photos hanging. If you get them to picture themselves living there, your home is as good as sold.

What to Do With Your Old Stuff?
Now that you’ve mustered the courage to get all those old souvenirs out of the home, the next question is what to do with it. Some things you might want to save, others you’ve probably forgotten you ever had in the first place.

In this case, the best thing you could do is simply throw it away. The alternative is to hold a garage sale and get rid of all those items and make some money in the process. Or you could donate old wardrobe and toys to a charity instead.

As for everything else you’re intent on keeping, consider storing it in the garage, safely tucked away in closed boxes. If you have access to an alternative storage area, go for it instead.

Make the House Shine
Another inexpensive and highly effective way to mesmerize your buyers is to thoroughly clean the house. This will be a more challenging effort than your regular Sunday cleaning. You’ll want to reach every corner of your home. Wash the windows, sidewalks and the exterior of your home.

Polish any metallic finishes in the kitchen and bathroom. Empty the refrigerator and thoroughly clean it. Hang fresh towels in the bathroom. You can even add decorations like bows and ribbons for a few extra points.

Wash your old rugs, and replace those beyond saving with new ones. Wash and wax the floors and vacuum every inch of the house.

Finally, go out and check if the exterior is as perfect as can be. Get your garden in shape by mowing and removing any weed. Last but not least, make sure the house number is not obstructed or damaged. If so, replace it with a new one.
