 Barbados to Host Cricket World Cup Final

 

The Caribbean nation of Barbados is set to host the Cricket World Cup final match on April 28, 2007. The semi final matches will be hosted by Jamaica and Saint Lucia on April 24 and 25, with the winners advancing to the final in Barbados on the 28th.

 

Barbados’ historic Kensington Oval will host the championship match. This stadium is located in Fontabelle on the western edge of the capital, Bridgetown. Renowned as one of the finest and most historic ovals in the world, it has undergone a complete makeover for the World Cup. It is now one of the most modern and luxurious facilities and will be a favorite for years to come, seating 28,000 fans. This will be the most important match to be held here ever - quite a statement considering it has been hosting cricket matches for 125 years.

 

Kensington Oval will also host six Super 8 matches, running from April 11 to April 21. These matches will determine who moves on into the semifinals.

 

The 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup is being hosted by the West Indies, combining efforts and facilities from all of the cricket-playing nations of the Western Caribbean, from Jamaica to Guyana. A unified West Indian team is representing these nations as well, giving it a solid chance of bringing home the championship. There are nine host sites throughout the islands, from Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica to Guyana National Stadium in Georgetown, Guyana on the northeastern tip of South America.

 

Getting to Barbados is easy for anyone interested in taking in the atmosphere of this once in a lifetime event. Grantley Adams International Airport, located on the south side of the island, has international flights that arrive and depart from all over the world, including London, New York, Miami, New York, Toronto and Manchester. Direct and connecting flights from other Caribbean and South American locales arrive regularly as well. The airport is about 8 miles, or 13 km, from the capital city of Bridgetown.
