The village ( originally a small goat farming community )and protected area which are known as Tindaya sits at the bottom of the 400m mountain also called Tindaya. Tindaya was once regarded as a very religious place and the mountain was and in fact still is considered sacred. This can still be seen today in more than 100 carvings in the smooth rock. These strange carvings which sit at the very top of the mountain, were only recently discovered in 1978.

The carvings are said to be there to ward off evil spirits.

On a clear day it is possible to see mount Teide the tallest volcano on Tenerife from the top of Tindaya. Old inhabitants of the area used to see mount Teide as the home of the devil and all the carvings face in that direction.

The rock that the mountain is formed from is very hard and defies erosion and when smoothed down and treated makes an attractive fascia. The stone can be seen today decorating the walls of Fuerteventura airport.

La Oliva is the main municipality in the north of Fuerteventura and of course the main Town hall is situated here. It is an old town with a church that was built over 300 years ago. La Oliva is a rural location with extensive green areas, museums and art galleries! You will find the famous exhibition centre and restored historical building La Casa de Los Coroneles which is the biggest rural mansion in the whole Canary Islands,

The town boast a selection of restaurants, bars, supermarkets, schools, gymnasium, green houses, pharmacies, petrol garage, banks, post office; in fact everything you need for daily life. Also, visit the Rural Hotel Casa Vieja for a fabulous restaurant and surroundings.
