Philadelphia began, as many little towns in South Africa do, as a farm. Local farmers travelled all the way, by horse and cart, to Durbanville for Nagmaal or the Eucharist. A local farmer donated a portion of his land to the local brethren to build a church and possibly this is how Philadelphia, meaning love of brothers, got its name.

Like most smaller rural towns, the local NG church of Philadelphia is centrally situated and can be seen from a way off.
