About the Area



Ballindine is a village in County Mayo, ireland. it is located along the Western Railway Corridor, 6.5 km south of Claremorris. The N17 road passes through the village, carrying over 10,000 vehicles daily, and it connects to the R328 road on the south side of town.



Ballindine is situated on the N17 just across the Galway border between Milltown and Claremorris (4 mls). it is believed that Ballindine got its name from the irish 'Baile an Daingin' meaning 'town of the fortress'.



The remains of a possible fort are located in a field close to Ballindine National School and a souterrain, just outside it, was connected underground to the ruins of the old church in Cloonmore 2 km to the east and to the ruins of the old church in Garryduff, 5 km west.



Great local effort goes into keeping Ballindine tidy and pleasing to the eye, with tall trees lining both sides of the main road, surrounded by neat and colourful, well-kept flower beds.



Modern Sculpture

A piece of modern sculpture, approx 30ft high, dominates the skyline along the main N17 road out of Ballindine towards Galway.



This colourful steel structure, based on the shape of an accordion, was designed by Ballintubber based sculptor, Cathal McCarthy, who was commissioned in 2002 by Mayo County Council and the DDA.



'The Player' commemorates the life and work of musician Martin O'Donohue, who founded the Disabled Drivers Association and was a renowned musician and music teacher in the Ballindine area.
