HiSTORiCAL BACKGROUND

Remains of an ancient settlement have been found at Pyrgos, on a hill near the sea about 4 km south of Kerames. Shells from the site date from the Late Minoan period iiiA to iiiG, while European reliefs on Taurus, coins and statuettes dating to the pre-palace period (2600-2000 BC) have also been found.

The site continued to be inhabited during archaic and classical times and has been identified as the ancient city of Vion or Kionia, while it may have been the ancient Apollonia or Lamon. The remains of the city that can be seen date from the 4th century BC. and in addition to the remains of houses and pottery, they also include the remains of a 100-meter-long wall on an east-west axis, possibly the remains of a fortification, and the remains of towers have also been excavated.

it was one of the hundred largest cities in Crete.

it was probably abandoned due to pirate raids in the 3rd century BC, with its inhabitants moving for security reasons to where Kerames and Agallianos are today.

According to the Egyptian census of 1834, Kerames had a purely Christian population and the census states that 40 families lived in the village. The 1881 census mentions Kerame and Agios ioannis in the municipality of Agios Pneumatos and had a purely Christian population, 337 inhabitants. The 1900 census had 440 inhabitants. The 1920 census lists it as the seat of a homonymous rural municipality. in 1925, Kerames was designated the seat of the Kerame community, which also included the settlements of Agallianos, Agia Fotini and Ligres, until the Kapodistrian administrative division, when the village was annexed to the Municipality of Lampis.
