Four Polish cities were recently approved by UEFA as being ready to host matches for the Euro 2012 Football Championship. The tournament, which is held every four years as the championship of Europe, is set to be held in both Poland and Ukraine. Due to the financial crisis that has hit the world, and Eastern Europe particularly hard, Ukraine is not as far along in its preparations as UEFA would like, and the venues there have not received final approval yet.

The four cities in Poland that will host matches are Warsaw, Poznan, Wroclaw and Gdansk. There are also two cities in reserve – Chorzow and Krakow - should the need arise for additional sites in Poland. In addition to the new and renovated stadiums in the host cities, Poland is undertaking massive infrastructure improvements to get ready for the tournament. New hotels are being constructed in the major cities, and airports are being upgraded to prepare for the influx of fans.

The main stadium will be the new National Stadium in Warsaw, which is now under construction. It is set for completion in May of 2011 and will have a normal seating capacity of 55,000. This venue will host the opening match of Euro 2012, group matches, a quarterfinal and a semifinal match.  In addition to the stadium, plans for Warsaw include a general purpose indoor stadium, an Olympic-size swimming pool, hotel and congress center and catering facilities. The nearby Warsaw Stadium railway stadium will be refurbished, and a subway station will open nearby as well.

Poznan is rebuilding its facility, the Stadium Miejski. It will hold from 40-45,000 seats when completed. Wroclaw’s Stadium in Maslice is a new venue that is scheduled to be completed in 2010 and will hold 44,000 fans. The Baltic Arena is a multi-use stadium in Gdansk that is under construction. It will hold 44,000 when completed in 2010.
