We want to feel safe and secure in our homes, but the news doesn't want us to feel that way. With a constant stream of negative and violent stories in the news, it's hard to feel secure. Thankfully, there are a few steps that you can take to deter burglars away from your home. Here are a few of them.

Create Obstacles

The first thing that burglars will look for is an easy target. By creating obstacles, you're giving them a challenge. Install a screen door, change your locks, or build a fence around your yard. This will create a boundary between the burglar and the house, and if the burglar decides that it'll take too much time or trouble to get into the house, they probably won't even bother.

Secure Your Garage

One of the most vulnerable points of your house is your garage. People take the garage for granted and often leave the door leading from the garage to the house unlocked. This shouldn't be the case. That door should remain locked at all times, and the same goes for the garage door. Garages are a common access point for burglars, and as mentioned above, the more obstacles in their way, the better.

Create Light and Noise

Burglars want a nice, dark house to break into. If there's lights and noise, chances are, someone's home and they're not going to break in. If you're not going to be home, invest in some timers that will automatically turn on your television or radio at random times. The more varied you can make the time, the better.

Install a Security Alarm

You should install a security alarm, then advertise it everywhere. Make sure you get an alarm that monitors both windows and doors and, if necessary, dial the police for you. Once it's installed, advertise it all over your property. Leave signs in both the front yard and on a window or two, or even on the door. If it's advertised that you have an alarm, there's a good chance that no one will bother you. Check out securitychoice.net for more information.

Get a Dog

Dogs are nicknamed man's best friend for a reason. Dogs can be fiercely loyal to families, especially if they're raised from a puppy. The larger the dog is, the louder the bark will be. Burglars won't take a chance on a house if they hear a dog. German Shepherds are the default choice thanks to how large they are and how family friendly they can be. Advertise the fact that a huge dog lives in the house as well, even if you decide to get a poodle.

Install Motion Lights

Motion lights are extremely handy and are often the first line of defense for your house. If a burglar's trying to sneak around and gets busted by the motion light, there's a good chance that they'll flee. You can install motion lights inside your home as well, so if they manage to get inside, they won't be able to sneak around inside your house.

Keep Things Out of Sight

Burglars are always on the lookout for things that they can steal, and if they can see the items from your front yard, that's almost an invitation to them. Keep any valuable items you have out of your vehicle and out of view from the windows in your house. If you have to have them near the window, invest in a decent set of blinds and shades so they won't be able to see inside.

There's no 100 percent effective way to prevent burglars from breaking into your house. If they're determined enough, they'll find a way in. These methods, though, will hopefully deter someone who is breaking into your house for the thrill of it. There are new and innovative ways to prevent burglary thought of each day. In what ways do you actively try to deter burglars from breaking into your house? Do you have any of the above methods set up, and have they prevented you from being burglarized thus far?
