When it comes to maintaining and cleaning our beds, few are aware of how small changes to your routine could prolong the life of your mattress and help prevent allergens wreaking havoc into your everyday life. But it’s not just looking after your bed that’s important. Keeping your pillows, throws and even best travel pillows newly washed can all make for a better night's sleep, providing both additional comfort and cosiness. With that in mind, we’ve explained 5 top tips for maintaining and cleaning your bed.

Protect Your Mattress

Mattress protectors do exactly what they say on the tin; protect your mattress. But they also provide far more benefits than helping to keep your mattress looking like new. It’s much easier to maintain a mattress protector than it is a mattress, providing you with the chance to wash them should any spillages occur, helping to reduce odours and keep your actual mattress fresher for longer. Mattress protectors can also provide additional comfort, especially if your current mattress is on the older side, helping you get a better night's sleep.

Flip It

When it comes to maintaining your bed, experts recommend flipping your mattress between 1 to 2 times per year. Older, innerspring mattresses, however, can be rotated slightly more at up to 5 times per year. Ultimately flipping your mattress will help to prevent any premature damage, helping to distribute the natural wear and tear that occurs. This is particularly true when thinking about the area of the mattress you sleep on, reducing the amount of sag. Even though flipping your mattress won’t necessarily make it last too much longer, it makes for a more comfortable night's sleep.

Wash All Bedding Regularly

When it comes to maintaining our bedrooms cleanliness, it’s easy to skip washing your bedding. However, making sure your bedding is cleaned at least once a week can dramatically improve your sleep quality, stopping it from collecting dust, dead skin and more. Having different bed sheets on rotation can help reduce the effort of the chore-like task, meaning that you never have to get home after a long day and have to put your bed sheets back on.

Remove Your Covers Daily

It’s not just cleaning your bed sheets which is so important to maintaining and cleaning your bed, but removing your covers for at least 20 minutes a day too. Removing your covers gives your mattress time to breathe, helping to fight against dust mites and moisture. This is particularly true just after you have got out of bed in the morning. Let them cool down naturally before re-making you bed such as whilst you enjoy your morning tea or coffee or are getting ready.

Open The Windows

Sometimes, there’s nothing like fresh air to get us going in the morning. Opening your window isn’t just a great way to improve the ventilation in your bedroom, but it’s effective at improving your sleep quality too, going in hand with our aforementioned bed cleanliness suggestions. Opening your door can also help, replacing inside air pollutants and reducing the likelihood of various condensation issues that may cause further damage to your home such as mould.
