Did you ever imagine the entire world would be brought to a grinding halt? Mate, we are not only witnessing history in the making but we are living it as well. Come to be known as the Great Pause, there is no point in constantly strolling through news headlines to check how many cases are going up in which country, how many deaths etc. It will only bring you down. What the world needs right now is a huge burst of positive energy that will emit an aura of healing and happiness. Yes, it is easier said than done. The best way to remain upbeat during such times is to devote yourself to projects that you have been putting off for a long time- whether it is DIY tasks or simply doing a deep cleaning of your home. Think about it- the daily hustle and bustle of normal life does not leave much time for you to do things keep getting delayed as they do not take top priority.

To help you get started, we have some brilliant tips to share on how to spring clean your home during this pandemic.

Let’s jump in!

Sanitise your trash bin

Bet you do not think much of cleaning your garbage can! As you are spending the majority of your time at home (for now!), you may not get a better chance. Take the trash out and before you replace the trash bag with a fresh one- give the bin a good rinse with anti-bacterial soap. Once done, wipe it down with a dry paper towel and make sure to get all the water spots! You do not want to deal with a wet trash bag!

Another little tip to make the garbage smell a bit better is to insert a couple of dryer sheets at its bottom. These babies will not only soak up any spills but will also mask stenches.

Clean Room by Room

No matter what the size of your apartment or house is, it is recommended that you clean room by room and allocate not more than two days per room. This flexible approach will allow you to maximise your cleaning efforts without tiring you out.

How can you get started? Make a list of all the rooms in your house that you wish to tackle and take it from there. Try not to clean the whole place in one go as it can get quite tiring and you may not be able to dedicate an equal amount of scrubbing, tidying and washing effort to each nook and corner. By dividing and conquering, you will get be much more productive.

If you love lists like we do, then note down what items need to be cleaned as per room. These can include but are not limited to your cupboards, your cabinets, your sofas etc. Also, another item to add on the list may include checking your appliances, your furnace, your carbon detector and smoke detector systems along with your boiler’s efficacy. Take a look at your guarantee and insurance policies for these items as well. For instance, if you wish to update your boiler’s coverage, click here for more information.

Apply baking soda on your mugs

Are you a coffee or tea addict? If yes, then your favourite mugs have probably gathered a lot of coffee and tea stains over the years. Did you know that placing a dab of baking soda on those stains may render them brand new? How can you use it? Just fill the mug in question with two parts water and one part baking soda. Let it immerse through the night, then just take your sponge to scrub it down with a nice rinse.

De-stink your gym attire

Sure, you may be giving your gym clothes a good washing to – but is it really getting rid of that perspiration smell? Try to wash them immediately once you come home to the gym or do a workout. If you are in a locker room, just give them a quick rinse with water and put them in a plastic bag till you get home. As soon as you get home, put them in the washing machine with a detergent specially fabricated for synthetics.

If you feel they still are emitting a gym odour, then take a bucket and add four parts cold water along with one part white vinegar. Let your gym attire soak in that mixture for a few hours. That should work!

Minimise cleaning products

With the threat of corona virus lingering over our heads at every step and corner, it is no wonder if you wish to invest in multiple cleaning brands to sanitise your home. Sure, even going grocery shopping is a daunting task now that requires advance preparation. However, if you are not comfortable spending so much money nor if you believe in the promises all these hygienic brands make- then you are a smart cookie. All you have to do is mix a bit of alcohol with water to sanitise the item in question. Remember, you can always just get a single multi-purpose cleaner and do not forget to pick up some fresh microfibre cloths as well.

Implement new habits

Once you are done cleaning your house, take a moment to reflect on the amount of time it took you. What if you maintained this near-level of hygiene perfection? Then, the next round of spring cleaning will not only require less effort from you but take up less of your precious time as well. Try to take out only fifteen minutes of your daily schedule to clear up around the house and do a vacuum and mop routine every week or so and you’re good to go.

Make it a family activity

Spring cleaning can be a monumental project and a bit too much for one person to take on. We do not doubt your competence but why not teach the children a bit about how to clean around the house whilst imparting the concept of cleanliness? You can offer some incentives as a reward such as ordering their favourite pizza for dinner. This way, you will also get some help and save time. It is a win-win situation for everybody! (Pssst, plus ordering a pizza means no cooking dinner! Utilise that extra time to relax after a long, hard day’s work.)
