UK Coal to Develop Land in South Yorkshire

The United Kingdom’s largest coalminer is quickly becoming one of the country’s largest property developers. UK Coal recently announced plans to develop the largest ever brownfield development in South Yorkshire. The plans allow for some 4,000 new homes at the company’s former coke works and mining site near Catliffe.
 
The 741 acre site is to be redeveloped over the next 20 years through the company’s property development branch, Haworth Estates. The residential community will, when complete, be home to as many as 9,000 residents and is the third major development in the region for UK Coal. The site plans also include shops, restaurants, schools, green leisure spaces, woodland and lakes, and a sustainable transport system.
 
Said a company spokesman: “It will create a magnificent small new town of highly sustainable environmentally sound and aspirational housing alongside a mix of commercial development that could over the period, produce in excess of 10,000 jobs.” He continued, “The proposal will transform this area with a mainly industrial past to a modern 21st century development that will benefit thousands of local people in terms of providing new affordable housing, employment opportunities, schools and leisure facilities.
 
In addition to the new plans, the company has recently received permission to for a 100 acre commercial development and manufacturing park. It also was granted permission to develop 917 homes plus a business park on 300 acres in at the former Prince of Wales Colliery site at Pontefract in West Yorkshire.
