Portuguese Silver Coast Draws Sports Fans and Buyers

The Silver Coast of Portugal, located between the northern city of Porto and the capital of Lisbon, is one of the more popular places for international real estate investors in this country. A new country club and golf courses by Seve Ballesteros and Pete Dye are in the works, and international equestrian star Jessica Kuerten has just opened a new equestrian center

Current British Open champion Kuerten is opening her center at the Quintos de Obidos Country Club, which is located near Obidos, about a 45 minute drive north of Lisbon along the coast. In addition to the equestrian center and clubhouse, the resort will have 79 large lakeside lots. The 1.3 acre home sites start at £355,000 and are already attracting Britons as well as Portuguese investors.

Not far from the center of Obidos is the Praia D’El Ray Golf and Beach Resort, named the 2007 European Golf Resort of the year by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators. 80% of the buyers of new homes at the resort are British, and the second phase of the resort is set to begin. There will be town homes as well as linked and detached villas here, set to be completed in the spring of 2009.

Off-plan properties at Praia D’El Ray’s Vila de Golfe begin at £290,000. These new homes overlook the golf course as well as the spectacular Atlantic Ocean. Not far from here is the Bom Succeso Resort, with a new 18-hole championship golf course set to open in early 2008.

Bom Succeso features one of the largest modern architecture projects in Europe. The homes and buildings here showcase modernist architecture, with some of the most striking housing anywhere.

Portugal is an easy flight from most UK airports. With the Silver Coast a quick drive north of Lisbon, or a slightly longer one south from Porto, this area is easy to get to and an ideal location for a second home or retirement villa.
