British Tourism Rises 7% On Lanzarote

The number of British tourists visiting the Lanzarote in the Canary Islands rose in November 2009 by nearly 7%. The first significant increase in visitor numbers recorded on this popular holiday island and property investment hot spot during the course of 2009.

The UK has long been Lanzarote´s most important tourist market – accounting for around 50% of all foreign tourist arrivals. And earlier in 2009 British visitor numbers were in freefall – as the double whammy of the credit crunch and the deprecation of sterling combined to create a 20% drop in arrivals from the UK.

The latest figures just released by AENA, the Spanish airport operators, reveals that there was a remarkable turnaround in this downward trend during the course of November 2009. News which will make very welcome reading for the many thousands of overseas owners of Lanzarote holiday villas  and apartments.

With the number of British tourists visiting the island rising for the first time by nearly 7%. To 63,753 visitors from 59,601 arrivals in November 2008. Whilst tourist numbers from the island’s third largest market of Eire also rose – up by 1.47% for the same period.

This turnaround is largely being attributed to the introduction of cheap flights to the island by low cost operators Ryanair. Who turned their attention to the Canaries last year in order to take advantage of the suspension of airport charges and taxes by the Spanish government. A move specifically designed to stimulate the country’s flagging tourist economy.

Ryanair inaugurated 17 new services to Lanzarote from the UK in late October. Offering headline returns from as little as £9.99. And by the end of November were instantly installed as the largest carrier of tourists to the island – accounting for 44,232 arrivals.

Such has been the success of these new services that Ryanair recently confirmed that they will now continue to operate flights to Lanzarote well into 2012. Providing a further boost for Lanzarote´s tourist and property sectors.
