Trieste Hosts Summit

The Italian city of Trieste is hosting the G8 Foreign Ministers from June 25 to June 27. Over 40 national delegations plan to be at the Trieste Foreign Minister’s Meeting, which is the major occasion for political talks among the foreign services prior to the L’Aquila Summit.

 

Trieste is along the northeast Italian coastline and lies near the border with Slovenia and, beyond that, Croatia. It has been called the Pearl of the Adriatic and is nestled between the Carso Mountains and the sea. For many years the town was a major port for the Austrian Empire and today it is a major seaport for Italy. The city has many old buildings and archeological sites and is a history-lover’s dream.

 

The city was a Roman outpost for many years and began to become a trading center during the first several centuries CE. There are many remains from the Roman period, including a beautiful amphitheater, the Arco di Riccardo and the Basilica Forense. In the 14^th century the city joined with the Austrian Empire and over the next couple of centuries the famous Castello di San Giusto was constructed.

 

Today the city is a center for scientific research in Italy. This sector is a major draw for young people from all over the country as there are numerous research facilities in the area, including the Area di Ricerca, which is one of the largest in Europe, the Sincrotrone Elettra, the International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, the Laboratory of Marine Biology and many others. The city is also home to the University of Trieste, founded in the 1920s.
