The Five Most Expensive Homes for Sale in Scotland

The nation’s wealth of historic castles and country homes are attracting increasing interest from overseas buyers who view the UK as a safe place to invest.

The most expensive property currently on the market north of the border is the Dall Estate, which includes a 38-bedroom house, 90 acres of land, a loch and even a hydro-electric power station.

It could all yours for a cool £7.5 million.

At the centre of the estate is the historic Dall House, which was used as a private school for more than 40 years until 2002.

Kyle Coburn, director of Asset Properties, is advertising the estate for sale.

He said the market for high-end real estate in Scotland was improving.

“There has been an increase in stamp duty, but that doesn’t seem to affect those interested in buying the most expensive properties,” he said. “There is a lot of foreign investment in Scotland as there is across the UK. The super rich view it as a safe place to buy a home.”

Country Life, the bible of those looking to buy premium properties in the UK, reported in August that “the market for Scottish country estates has stood its ground remarkably well”, despite the introduction of Land and Building Transaction Tax (LBTT) in April.

DALL ESTATE PERTHSHIRE - £7.5 MILLION

Located on the south shore of Loch Rannoch in Highland Perthshire, this former clan seat estate dates back to 1347. The present house was commissioned by Clan Chief George Duncan Robertson and built by the renowned architect Thomas Mackenzie. It was the home of the once prestigious Rannoch School until 2002.

CRAIGCROOK CASTLE, EDINBURGH - £6 MILLION

This 16th century castle lies just three miles from Edinburgh city centre. The building dates to 1542 and was extensively remodelled by the celebrated Scottish architect William Henry Playfair in 1835. The castle is set over 3 storeys and offers views of Corstorphine Hill, Blackhall and the Firth of Forth.

CASSILIS CASTLE, AYRSHIRE - £5 MILLION

This 13th century castle was lavishly restored after it was bought by Kate Armstrong, the founder of the price comparison website Confused.com, in 2009. The estate, near Maybole, comes with 300 acres of land and was profiled on the BBC series Restoration Home.

TOWER OF LETHENDY, PERTHSIRE - £4.6 MILLION

The perfect home for any serious golf fans, this estate includes its own private golf course. The sprawling Scots baronial mansion is built from local red sandstone and contains a library described as “one of the finest in Scotland” by its selling agent.

HATTON CASTLE, ABERDEENSHIRE - £4.5 MILLION

Lying 30 miles north-west of Aberdeen, Hatton Castle has belonged to the Duff family since 1709. Its estate contains numerous attractive staff cottages, a working quarry and extensive farmland.
