Holiday Homes in Spain
Spain is the number one destination for British overseas vacationers and there is much to offer. From the beautiful, warm Mediterranean coastline, to the historic cities and spectacular Pyrenees Mountains, Spain has just about everything a visitor could ask for. With its wide variety of terrain and climate, Spain is a wonderful place to visit year round. With so much to offer, there is no end of homes and properties for the vacationer to let.
Spain, divided into 17 autonomous regions, is an incredibly rich and diverse country with much to offer. When visiting the country, the popular tourist areas can be divided up as follows: Andalucia and the southern cities, the Costa del Sol to the Costa Blanca, Madrid and most of the area of Castilla, the Balearic Islands, the northeast region of Catalonia and Valencia with Barcelonia, the Pyrenees Mountains, The Basque Country and the northwest coast of Galicia to Cantabria. There are also the Canary Islands, but they exist almost as a separate country. Each area has an abundance of tourist attractions, including places to stay and homes to let.

Certainly the most popular place for holiday travelers is the Mediterranean coast of Spain running from Gibralter to Alicante. The two most well known areas are the Costa del Sol and, a little farther to the north, the Costa Blanco. There are over 300 sunny days along the southern coast of Spain, and the warm days of the summer make it an ideal place for a beach vacation.
The inland part of Andalucía, with the cities of Cordoba, Seville and Grenada is also quite popular. These cities are full of history and have their own unique cultures. The other major inland tourist destination is Madrid and surrounding areas. Madrid is the business and political capital of Spain. Located in the middle of the country in what was once Castilla, this part of the country is rich with cultural and historical destinations. In addition to Madrid, the cities of Toledo, Salamanca, Segovia and Valladolid are in this area. Madrid almost shuts down in the summer, so that is not a good time to visit as everyone will be at the beach.
The northeast coast, including Catalonia, Valencia and Barcelona is cooler in the winter than its southern counterpart, but very popular in the summer. It doesn’t get quite as hot as the southern areas and is more popular for those who want to avoid the crowds of the south and still be close to major metropolitan areas. Barcelona is a very cosmopolitan city and is the meeting place of several cultures.
The Pyrenees Mountains are popular in both summer and winter. Full of great skiing, these mountains draw both locals and foreign visitors for the snow. They are becoming increasingly popular for summer travelers who want to escape the heat that overtakes the rest of Spain in the summer.
The Basque Country, with its historic towns of San Sebastian and Bilbao, is a unique place for travelers and even has its own language. Farther to the northwest are the regions of Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia. The coast here, facing the Atlantic Ocean and English Channel, is cooler in the summer than the Mediterranean coastline and has become a popular place for Spanish vacationers.
For international travelers who wish to visit Spain, it is one of the easiest places to get to and find a place to stay. There is an auto ferry that will take you and your car directly to Spain. This runs from Plymouth to Santander. This ferry leaves twice per week and it is approximately a 20 hour trip one way. It is also possible to take a ferry or the Channel Tunnel to France and drive to Spain. For more information on ferry travel visit Brittany Ferries (www.brittany-ferries.co.uk).
