Property Costa Tropical Spain

The Costa Tropical, situated between the Costa Almeria to the northeast and the Costa del Sol to the southwest, is a fascinating place on the Spanish coast for residents and visitors alike. This area has one of Europe’s most unique microclimates and some 320 days of sun a year. This subtropical paradise along the southern coast of Spain is an ideal location for those who want sun, warm weather and great beaches.

Stretching from one Granada provincial border to another, the Costa Tropical begins around La Rabita in the east and runs to La Herradura in the west. The coast along this stretch of Spain runs almost exactly east west, before curving to the north and south on either end. The climate here is affected by the winds and waters from Africa and the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the north. According to the World Health Organization, this is one of the healthiest places to live on the planet.

Along this stretch of coast, there are three main towns, Almuñécar, Motril and Salobreña and a total of 26 beaches, many of which have been repeatedly awarded the Blue Flag, which confirms the cleanliness of both beach and water. Motril is the easternmost of these three towns although it is in the middle of the Costa Tropical, and is a lively and busy Spanish town of shops and business. It is popular in the summer for its seven beaches that offer a range of water sports and activities, and is often considered the second most important city in the province behind the capital and namesake Grenada.

Motril has seven beaches, a few of which have been awarded the accolade of some of Europe’s cleanest beaches. Spanish families in particular love Motril’s beaches. The most well known beach is the Playa Granada which has a very family friendly atmosphere. Younger visitors enjoy the more lively Poniente Beach with its promenade and the Playa de Calahonda with its deep, clean waters. Further from town there are water sports opportunities at Carchuna beach, a nudist beach at La Joya, or the shallow waters and fine sand of the beach in Torrenueva.

Motril hosts the only major golf course on this stretch of coast, the Los Moriscos Golf Club. This course is reasonably level and is dotted with pine trees, and offers a beautiful setting for a round of golf. A bit inland is the Grenada Golf Club, and to both the east and west are many more courses and resorts for those who want to play a few rounds. Some of the best golf in Europe is not far down the coast around Malaga, along the Costa del Sol.

Salobreña is smaller, prettier and more traditional; it is a whitewashed village popular with Spanish and foreign tourists alike. The small white houses are built on a rocky outcrop which is topped with an old Moorish Castle built in the 10th century. Hidden among the small city streets are some of the best local bars to have a drink and some tapas. Salobreña boasts a long stretch of beach, which is popular in the summer but is not crowded with tourists as others nearby. One of the things that you can't miss are the fields growing sugar cane. Salobreña remains one of the largest producers of cane sugar in the area and varieties of tropical fruit are also produced locally, including the famous chirimoya or custard apple

Almuñécar, which is the westernmost of the three major Costa Tropical towns, is the tourist capital. It has plenty of water sports, restaurants and bars serving a variety of cuisines, a water park and long sandy beaches. Almuñécar has approximately 26,000 residents with a large German and English expatriate community. The town has some long stretches of sandy beach with several small coves where people enjoy fishing, and scuba diving, hand gliding, jet-ski rental, boat trips and boat rental are available in and around Almuñécar. The beaches include Cabria, GaleraVelilla and Tesorillo.

The Costa Tropical offers many opportunities for home buyers and real estate investors, from beach front property, to inland estates to something that allows you to ski in the morning and relax on your deck in the evening. In the town of Itrabo, near to the beaches of Salobreña, Motril and Almuñecar, a complex has apartments of one and two bedrooms with large terraces where you can enjoy the marvelous climate.

As the most popular destination along this coast, the town has a thriving nightlife with numerous late night bars and clubs throughout the town. One of the most popular spots is Los Bajos, which is a row of very popular beachfront bars and nightclubs where you can dance until the early hours of the morning. During the day Almuñécar has plenty of shops, bars and restaurants catering to a wide range of needs and palettes

The Residential Jardines de la Noria is situated in an ideal location next to the gentle waters of the Mediterranean Sea, surrounded by the picturesque village of Nerja. This traditional Fisherman's Village is an ideal place for relaxing and enjoying the Andalucian way of life, right on the water. Properties here begin at just over €290,000. There are other homes and properties that are available along the coast that will make excellent holiday, rental or retirement homes.

With its location between Malaga and Almeria, the Costa Tropical is easy to get to whichever end you plan to visit or live. Malaga Airport (AGP) is the busiest airport in the region and the third busiest in Spain. It is to the west of the Costa Tropical, so if you are headed towards that side this is an easy and convenient airport to fly into. It has service to most major UK and European cities and many discount carriers fly here.

On the other end of the coast is Almeria Airport (LEI), which is the second busiest airport in the region. It also has flights to most UK cities on a number of discount carriers, so it is a good option for those traveling to the eastern end of the Costa Tropical. Another option is the Grenada International Airport (GRX), which is named for the poet Federico Garcia-Lorca. It handles about 1.6 million passengers and has flights to major UK cities. It is reasonably convenient to much of the coast, particularly the central section.
