Spain’s Costa Cálida is an area that is growing in popularity and in what it has to offer tourists and home buyers. This coast covers the Spanish region of Murcia, which is also the name of the main city and capital of the region. Costa Cálida stretches 250 kilometers from the beach at El Mojon, the first town in Murcia after leaving Alicante province, to La Carolina beach in Águilas, the last resort in the region before the border with Almería. The Murcia coastline is rich in contrasts and full of surprises for visitors to this part of Spain. There are solitary coves that appear suddenly in the midst of long, idyllic beaches, and completely bare mountains that tower over lush, green market gardens. And surprises such as that offered by La Manga del Mar Menor, one of nature´s most beautiful and unique spots that draws thousands of visitors to its sandy beaches every year. The Mar Menor, on the northern end of the Costa Cálida, is a saltwater lagoon that is separated from the rest of the Mediterranean by La Manga, a small strip of sand and ridges that protects the Mar from inclement weather and keeps the water warm throughout the year. While the area is known for its tasty seafood and has a small, local industry around that, La Manga del Mar Menor is now focused on tourism. There are hotels, leisure and sports facilities unmatched anywhere as well as 42 kilometers of beach. The water is clear, and there are also plenty of other activities from tennis to golf, not to mention sailing, diving or water skiing. The city of Murcia, with a population of 560,000 in the metro area, is the major city and capital of the region. The city is a bit inland, but less than an hour’s drive to the coast. It is semi-arid and is located in the middle of the huerta of Murcia, which is a low lying plain. There are several historic sites to see in the city. The Cathedral of the Diocese of Cartagena was built in the 14th and 15th centuries in Castilian Gothic style, with later additions. The Glorieta is the city center, where the city hall is located. The other major city in the region is Cartagena, on the southern part of the Costa Calida. This city is full of history, with many Roman buildings and archeological sites to see, with one of the best preserved being the Roman Theater. With its location on the water, Cartegena has many beaches, both near the city and farther out. The Isla Plana Beach is located to the southwest of the city in a nice stretch of calm water. La Morena Beach, or Losa Beach, is a popular naturist beach with camping. For golf lovers, this area has come a long way in a short amount of time. Some of Spain’s newest and nicest golf resorts are located on this stretch of coastline. With the addition of many of these clubs has also come resort housing. Properties along most courses are available for purchase, buy to lease, or to rent for your holiday. Lots of courses and lots of options. The Alhama Golf Resort has three Jack Nicklaus designed courses centered on a small resort town. The courses are the main attraction, of course, but the individual resorts have plenty of property options for those who want to live here or visit. This resort town is about 20 kilometers southwest of Murcia. Some other golf resorts in the region include Hacienda Riquelme Golf Resort, La Torre Golf Resort, Mar Menor Golf Club and El Valle. The Costa Cálida has grown so much in recent years that there is plenty of new property available, as well as many off-plan developments under way. For those who want something older, there are some country homes and estates that can had in this stretch as well. The major town of Murcia has a number of new developments and properties that are available to move in or are under construction. Apartments at the Alhama Golf Resort are currently going for as low as £57,500 for a one bedroom unit. There are also many open plots of land in this area on which you can build your own home, with prices quite reasonable. For individual homes and villas, there are many options from which to choose. In Pinoso, there is a new development of homes in several design and bedroom options. The La Loma Resort currently has 328 apartments, 62 townhouses and 80 available for sale. Just 10 kilometers from Murcia is Frondoso Valley, where you can choose between two, three or four bedroom terraced townhouses, semi detached 3 bedroom villas plus apartments and maisonettes. Within the development there are sport areas, green spaces and social and communal locations. The Costa Calida is full of great property wherever you look. The Costa Calida, like most of the Spanish coastline, is fairly easy to get to, particularly from the UK. There are two major airports that serve the Costa Calida: Alicante International Airport (ALC) is the larger airport, and Murcia-San Javier Airport (MJV) is a small, but growing facility near the Mar Menor, about 45 kilometers southeast of Murcia. Alicante is a little north of the Costa Calida, more in the Costa Blanca region, but still quite convenient for much of this area. It is the sixth busiest airport in Spain and has flights to most major airports in the UK and Europe. Murcia-San Javier has scheduled and charter flights to a number of UK airports as well, and is served by several low cost airlines.
