Introducing Gambian Property

Introduction to Gambia

 Gambia

The Republic of The Gambia, usually called The Gambia or just Gambia, is the smallest country in Africa. It lies on the northwest coast and is surrounded on all sides by Senegal, except on the west where it borders the Atlantic Ocean. This small country, with English as its official language, already is a well-known tourist destination and is emerging as a target for international real estate investors as well. The tropical climate, location next to the ocean and relatively low land and property costs make it an exciting opportunity for those looking to invest abroad, be it for development, retirement, vacation or rental property.

The country straddles the Gambia River and the capital city of Banjul sits near the mouth of the river where it meets the ocean. The most popular tourist destinations, and the most likely targets for investors, are near the capital and along the coast. Traveling from Banjul, the cities and villages along the coast and just inland include Bakau, Serrekunda, Brufut, Sukuta, Tanji, Bijilo, Brusubi and Brikama. All of these locations have something to offer the real estate investor.

There are a number of new developments under construction along the coast and in the villages nearby. If you are looking for off-plan property, the opportunities right now are available, and at very low costs. There are also a number of inhabitable existing properties that can be had for a very small investment. Some properties have been constructed and just need to be finished out, pending a sale. If you are looking for a good international investment, it’s hard to go wrong in Gambia.

Brufut is a small village about halfway down the coast and is quickly becoming a destination for investors looking for high quality property at low costs. There are several projects either under way here or in the works. You can purchase both off-plan housing and property to build whatever you may want. Brufut Gardens is a planned development that is currently under construction with a number of single family homes together in one gated community on the beach.

Bijilo Village is a new development in the town of Bijilo, just west of the capital and only a few minutes from the airport. There are a number of well constructed existing houses in this village that are also for sale, some with a good amount of land. Sukuta is a quickly developing area west of Bijilo on the coast. Farther down the coast, Tanji is becoming popular for tourists and investors.

Gambia has an international airport, so it is not difficult to get here. Located in the city of Yundum, just south of the capital, Banjul International Airport (BJL) (some call it Yundum International Airport and it is often abbreviated as BIA) has undergone renovations in recent years and is a modern facility capable of handling most needs. During the most popular winter months, there are frequent charter flights in and out of the airport. There are daily commercial flights to neighboring African cities as well as to many European cities, including London, Manchester, Madrid and Frankfurt.
