The locals of the city have nicknamed it “The Marvelous City” or A Cidade Maravilhosa. The city is most famous and well known for its spectacular Carnival and beautiful beaches. It is marked by expensive hotels and residential buildings. Ipanema Beach is considered one of the most beautiful in the world and was made famous by the song The Girl from Ipanema. This area has always played a role in the culture of Rio de Janeiro. The area has its own universities, art galleries, theaters and cafes. The area is considered to be one of the safest districts. The West Zone of Rio is an area where one is able to see stark differences in social classes. There are several “favelas” that are spread throughout the entire city. These areas are poor areas where the houses are shanty-like and crime is high. These areas tend to be scattered throughout the town. This area, however, is also the area that is under a new wave of construction. Many neighborhoods, high-rise flats and shopping centers are being built in this area.
