Ambergris Caye, Belize One of the most sought-after locations in one of the most popular Central American countries is Ambergris Caye, Belize. The most northern and largest of the 200 plus islands that are part of and near Belize’s barrier reef, Ambergris Caye is a 25 mile long island that is just off the southern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. Ambergris Caye used to be part of the Yucatan, but centuries ago the Maya dug the Bacalar Chico canal through the peninsula, forming the island. It is named after the ambergris that was extracted from whales that were once hunted here. The island is known now as world-class destination for diving. With the second longest barrier reef in the world, the 190 mile Belize barrier reef has some of the best diving, snorkeling and fishing in the world. Ambergris Caye, just a half a mile from the reef, is the perfect place to stay and enjoy the spectacular sea all around. San Pedro is the major town on the island and is at the southern end. There are approximately 4,000 year-round inhabitants and many more seasonal residents and visitors. This former fishing village is a popular tourist destination and has plenty of things to see and do, as well as some great resorts. Near San Pedro and throughout the island are several new developments under way that will make it even easier for those who want to have their own place to stay in this tropical paradise. Las Terrazas is a new resort that recently opened up north of San Pedro. In addition to its condominiums and villas, the resort has many amenities include state-of-the-art fitness center, spa, lap pool with roof top sun deck, and a beach pool with swim-up bar, Jacuzzi, unique curve-shaped pier/dock, and the largest private beach front access in Ambergris Caye. Another new resort is The Phoenix, a condo resort in San Pedro along the waterfront. There are 30 residences with views of the Caribbean and many interior amenities, as well as a swimming pool, beach, restaurant and spa. The Royal Belize Village is another new development under way north of San Pedro. Getting to Ambergris Caye is fairly easy. Belize City has the country’s major airport, and several carriers fly directly here from the US and other locations. There are flights from Belize City to San Pedro and Ambergris Caye on a regular basis. The 40 mile trip, which takes about 20 minutes by air, can also be made by boat in about 75 minutes. Chetumal airport in Mexico also has occasional flights to San Pedro.
