Inland North Portugal

The inland north of Portugal is a mountainous region full of wild scenery, small villages and history. It stretches from the Spanish border in the north to the Tagus River at its southern end. In general, this is the northeast part of the country, and also known to many simply as the mountains.

 Serra de Estrela Mountain

Serra de Estrela mountains

Bordering Spain on the north and east and encompassing the Serra de Estrela mountain range, the inland north/mountain region of Portugal is the largest part in the country. It has five traditional administrative districts and is about 225 kilometers from north to south. The northernmost part of this region is full of historic villages and is focused on small farming, with some vineyards along the Douro River. In the central and southern parts are a few larger towns, with Castelo Branco and Covilha being the largest. The economy here is more light industrial with textiles being important. Overall, tourism is becoming more important to this part of the country.

North of the Douro River and south of the Spanish border is the traditional province of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro. This part of the country was cut off from the rest of Portugal by mountains along the western edge and the Douro on the south, making it quite isolated. That has improved in recent years, but it is still an area of small towns and family farms. The largest town up here is Chaves, with a population of less than 50,000. This is a town and area that has many historical features. The original Roman bridge still stands in the town, crossing the Tamega River and there is a medieval fort as well.

In the very northeast part of the area and country lies the district and town of Braganca. This small town, which has a population of approximately 35,000 residents, lies just south of the Culebra Mountains. It is 255 kilometers northeast of Porto and 515 kilometers from Lisbon. Originally a Celtic city, there a many old ruins and sites to see. This part of the country traditionally provided the kings of Portugal and emperors of Brazil and was capital of the Trás-os-Montes province. North of Braganca is the Montesinho Natural Park along the border with Spain.

The whole of the inland north and mountains has some of the largest and nicest parks in Portugal. The mountains in the middle of the region are highest, and Portugal’s only ski area is in the Serra de Estreal Mountains at Loriga. The beautiful mountains and natural parks in this are the major attractions for visitors and those who are interested in having a home here. The Serra da Malcata is a rolling heather-clad mountain range on the Portuguese/Spanish border in the central part of the country, and home to the endangered Iberian Lynx.

The Serra da Estrela Natural Park, the largest park in the country, encompasses many of the spectacular mountains and has the highest peaks in the country. Along the Spanish border to the south of Castelo Branco is the Parque Natural do Tejo Internacional. This international park along the Tagus River is famous for its scenery and wildlife.

In addition to the many parks and beautiful scenery are several small towns that add to the economy and diversity of the region. Castelo Branco and Covilha each have nearly 60,000 residents. Covilha is 300 kilometers northeast of Lisbon and 100 kilometers east of Coimbra. The town is a major university center in Portugal and there are also a number of small industries in and around the city. The area is a major producer of textiles and fabrics for the country and the town is one of the main gateways into the beautiful Serra da Estrela Natural Park.

50 kilometers to the south of Covilha is Castelo Branco, which takes its name from a medieval castle that the town grew up around. This was an important frontier town near the Spanish border, along which are a number of old castles and forts that were meant to protect Portugal from cross-border incursions. It is near the Tejo Internacional Natural Park and the Naurtejo Geopark and provides a great base for exploring the region. North of Covilha is the highest town in the country, Guarda.

For most of the inland northern areas of Portugal the closes major airport is outside of Porto. Francisco Sa Carneiro Airport (OPO) is about 15 kilometers north of Porto and is served by several low-cost carriers to the UK. The Lisbon airport, Portela Airport (LIS) is the largest airport in the country and is within driving distance to much of the inland north region. A new airport is tentatively planned to be built in Ota, 50 kilometers north of Lisbon, which will make this region even more accessible. There are several smaller autoroutes from both Lisbon and Porto to take you into the mountains, and a limited regional train network as well.

This part of Portugal offers the property investors plenty of opportunities. There are many old country homes that are available for very reasonable prices. Some of these homes can be purchased for a very small investment and restored any way you want. Others are available for slightly more but are ready to live in right away. Many existing houses are available for less than €100,000, and for more than that you can get quite a bit. This area of Portugal is a great place for a country getaway at reasonable prices.
